COVID-19 UPDATE: August 19 2022

Since 31 December 2019 and as of 18 August 2020, 21 896 155 cases of COVID-19 (in accordance with the applied case definitions and testing strategies in the affected countries) have been reported, including 774 539deaths.

Cases have been reported from:

Africa: 1 128 596 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are South Africa (589 886), Egypt (96 590), Nigeria (49 485), Morocco (43 558) and Ghana (42 653).

Asia: 5 686 952 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are India (2 702 742), Iran (345 450), Saudi Arabia (299 914), Pakistan (289 832) and Bangladesh (279 144).

America: 11 784 380 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are United States (5 438 325), Brazil (3 359 570), Peru (541 493), Mexico (525 733) and Colombia (476 660).

Europe: 3 269 413 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Russia (927 745), Spain (359 082), United Kingdom (319 197), Italy (254 235) and Germany (224 014).

Oceania: 26 118 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Australia (23 599), New Zealand (1 293), Guam (577), Papua New Guinea (333) and French Polynesia (211).

Other: 696 cases have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.

Deaths have been reported from:

Africa: 25 873 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are South Africa (11 982), Egypt (5 173), Algeria (1 379), Nigeria (977) and Sudan (803).

Asia: 120 438 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are India (51 797), Iran (19 804), Indonesia (6 207), Pakistan (6 190) and Turkey (5 996).

America: 422 967 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United States (170 497), Brazil (108 536), Mexico (57 023), Peru (26 481) and Colombia (15 372).

Europe: 204 800 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United Kingdom (41 369), Italy (35 400), France (30 429), Spain (28 646) and Russia (15 740).

Oceania: 454 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are Australia (421), New Zealand (22), Guam (5), Papua New Guinea (3) and Northern Mariana Islands (2).

Other: 7 deaths have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.

NOTE:

On 17 August 2020, in Malta, the total number of cases resulted in a lower case count compared to the previous day. This may be due to a revision in historical data.

The cases reported in the table below for Spain include cases from the previous 14 days with available data at the time of data collection. On 12 August 2020, Spain retro corrected the cumulative number of deaths leading to a negative increase of deaths

On 10 August 2020, the United Kingdom reported less cumulative deaths. This is due to revisions in historical data. 

On 17 July 2020, Kyrgyzstan has changed their registration statistics on COVID-19 by introducing two codes (laboratory confirmed cases and clinical-epidemiological cases). This leads to a significant increase in case and death numbers on 18 July 2020.

Data completeness depends on the availability of information from the affected areas. All data should be interpreted with caution as the outbreak is evolving rapidly. In addition, due to the unavailability of date-of-onset data and different testing policies per country, this figure might not be reflective of the evolution of the epidemic.

In the graph, no deaths are reported on 25 May in Europe due to the national retro-correction of death data in Spain. The number of deaths in Europe was less than the negative numbers reported by Spain that day.
